NADDC Hosts Validation Workshop for National Occupational Standards on Electric and CNG/Auto Gas-Powered Vehicles
In a proactive move to foster an enabling environment for innovation and growth in the automotive sector, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) organised a critique and validation workshop on the Draft National Occupational Standards (NOS) for conversion, calibration and maintenance of Electric Vehicles and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)/Auto Gas-Powered Vehicles. The event, which commenced on Monday, 4th of March 2024 ended on Tuesday, 5th March 2024, at the New-Keffi Hotel, Keffi-Akwanga road, Nasarawa State.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of NADDC, Mr. Joseph Osanipin extended a warm welcome to stakeholders and participants, highlighting the workshop’s pivotal role in shaping the future for the Nigerian automotive and transportation industries. He stated that the primary objective of the workshop was to develop a blueprint for skills development and standardized operational procedures in the conversion, calibration and maintenance of these new automotive energy sources, in line with the renewed hope agenda of the government.
Osanipin also emphasized on the significance of the Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP 2023 – 2033), relaunched by the Federal Government in 2023, aimed at revitalizing the automotive industry and fostering sustainable growth through technological and skills development.
The NOS under scrutiny were meticulously crafted through collaborative efforts involving various automotive sector stakeholders. Developed in accordance with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) and endorsed by the Federal Government via the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), these standards aim to streamline training and certification processes within the auto industry. The NSQF, a system facilitating the recognition and classification of skills and competencies, irrespective of their acquisition method, seeks to promote competency-based Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) nationwide.
With NADDC spearheading efforts promoting CNG/Auto Gas-Powered and electric vehicles, Nigeria anticipates a reduction in reliance on traditional fuels like petrol and diesel, consequently addressing environmental concerns and rising energy prices. The development of the NOS, not only underscores NADDC’s commitment to skills enhancement in the automotive sector but also signifies a pivotal step towards economic diversification, as well as job and wealth creation for Nigerians.
The validation workshop serves as a platform to ensure comprehensive stakeholder engagement. It is hoped that the finalized National Occupational Standards will accurately reflect the collective expertise and insights of industry players.
